Every Math Minute Counts Full Class

This video is about Problem solving is a fundamental means of developing mathematical knowledge at any level. Problem solving gives students a context to help them make sense out of the mathematics they are learning. Problems can be used to introduce new concepts and extend previously learned knowledge (or skills). Let’s take a look at how Ms. Robbins shares a new problem with her class. Notice how the students identify the important new vocabulary with a turn and talk and signals to activate thinking. Let’s take a look at how Ms. Robbins encourages writing in her math class during problem solving. Notice how students are asked to explain their steps but not solve at this time. Also, take note how Ms. Robbins gives ongoing feedback to the students as they are working.
A Math Morning Message

Let’s take a look at Ms. Robbins fourth grade class at Smith Elementary during their Math Morning Message. Note how she asks her students for their goals, but she also shares her personal teaching goal with her students on the Top Tuesday board.
Small Groups Lesson 1
This video is about Let’s take a look at one of Ms. Robbins Small Groups. During this small group lesson we will see her showing and reminding students how to read a protractor. Notice how her lesson is planned, ready to go, and housed in a math sketchbook. Ms. Robbins ensures that her students are working through their math menu. Let’s take a look at how she checks back with her group and uses the Ask 3 then me strategy for managing workstations.
Small Group Lesson 2

You may notice she uses the same lesson sketchbook pages but the lesson looks very different for this group of students. Also, notice how the students use their math journals to anchor their past learning experiences. A math journal can be a wonderful classroom tool used in many ways.
Whole Group Lesson
This video is about Now it is time to check out Ms. Robbins whole group lesson. Notice how she starts her lesson by reading and explaining components of the content and language objectives. She also activates thinking by engaging students in an interactive warm up to review angles.
Number Talks Lesson

Notice how it is February and she is still reminding the students of other hand signals. Also, check out her use of academic vocabulary throughout the Number Talk.
